Although the often-forgotten chocolate of Italy may not be the top of everyone’s shopping lists, it tastes seriously good. In fact, Italian chocolate is just as popular as Swiss chocolate, but there are a few big differences between the two.

The Mediterranean country of Italy is famous for a range of things; beautiful architecture, its rich history, Italian white wine, pasta…and so much more.
Italy is also the home of some of the world’s most famous chocolatiers like Ferrero, Caffarel and Venchi, so it’s no wonder why the country has become so well-known for its award-winning chocolate – even though many people would think of Belgium and Switzerland first.
What makes Italian chocolate special?
Italian chocolate is completely unique, not at all like the sweet treat you can find from other countries like Belgium and Switzerland.
1. Pure ingredients
Chocolate in Italy is taken pretty seriously so they only use the purest ingredients when making chocolate. In particular, Italians don’t like their chocolates to contain vegetable oils or anything other than pure cocoa beans for the best flavour.
Using just cocoa butter, cocoa powder and milk, Italians are able to produce delicious, authentic chocolate that everyone is sure to love.
2. Creamier and sweeter
Swiss chocolate is known for being dark and bitter, whereas Italian chocolate is much more creamy and sweeter in flavour because of the higher sugar levels.
This makes for a more pleasurable eating experience, where consumers can also enjoy the sweet flavours of fruits, nuts and raisins.
3. Creative flavours
Italians are known for being creative, and this doesn’t stop when it comes to their chocolate.
Chocolatiers are passionate about coming up with new flavour combinations and new methods of preparation in order to make totally unique chocolate.
Compared to other countries, a lot of Italian chocolate is handmade and you can really taste all of the care and attention that goes into making the confectionary when you take a bite.
Although the method of preparation takes longer than other types, Italian chocolate is normally a lot cheaper than Swiss chocolate.
Italian chocolate is one of the tastiest and most affordable chocolates that you can buy at the shops, but what is it that makes it so special?
Most Italian chocolate is made by hand using the purest ingredients, making a superior taste experience compared to other popular chocolate-making regions like Switzerland and Belgium.
Italian chocolate is also commonly creamier in texture and tastes sweeter due to the high sugar content and additions of fun ingredients like fruits and nuts.
